It may not look like it on the reg, but my style is rooted in chola. This is thanks to my big sister, cousins and their collective crew that were just the most badass bitches I had ever and probably will ever see. They taught me how to wrap my bun in a bandana, how to sharpen my winged eyeliner to razor points, and that every piece of clothing I could ever need was waiting for me at the army surplus–from baggy Ben’s to a canvas belt with a big “B” on the slide buckle. Although if I needed black house slippers and hoodless windbreakers, I’d have to take my gordita ass to Kmart, homes. But one style staple I never got to embrace from my Mexican roots was the bright, woven tapestry of a zarape.

These colors, mang. Again, I use things that are totally not neutrals as neutrals, like GOLD FUCKING LEOPARD PRINT, to give them room to pop.

Zarape plus size mini skirt

I remember my mom went to Mazatlan with her girlfriends when I was young enough for it to feel like a year even though it was probably a four-day weekend. She came back with a doll wearing a dress just like this skirt. Really wish I had kept. Would have been one hell of a photo opp. Tonta.

Oh well. Seeing the city in my sunnies almost makes up for what could have been. Anyway, everyone should check out Mi Vida Boutique. They are based in LA and took a custom order on this skirt to accommodate my plus-size culo. All I had to do was email them! Check them out right meow. Also, buy me this pin, pleece:

beatles4I’ve had this t-shirt for years, cut the neck off long ago but it SOMEHOW didn’t occur to me to turn this fucker into a crop top right quick to pull off one of my favorite style combos: rock tee/jeweled necklace/skirt YASSNESS.

beatles3JUST LOOK AT THEM! Straight outta Tron, homie. Also, I nabbed that necklace from The Vault at Disneyland, fun fact.

Pink wool skirt

I’ve been seeing a lot of posh pink looks on the fall runways. As much as I love the whole Jackie O thing, I have never been a fan of pink on myself. If given the opportunity to create a pink outfit for one of my creamier friends, however, I would jump at the chance!

I thought this simple pink wool skirt from J.Crew was the perfect example of the tailored yet ultra-femme trend. Not to mention, a staple piece like this is an investment just because it is so versatile and timeless.

For The Office

A basic blouse in either a neutral or light pink shade and a great pair of heels are all you need to make your mark at work. This collar necklace from INPINK is a fabulous added touch.

For The Outing

What’s more chic for fall than a statement sweater paired with a wool skirt? Playing off the geometrical pattern in the top, I went for accessories and shoes that had their own architectural flair. It’s an easy and comfortable yet bold look.

Striped skirt

Good god am I ready for this heatwave to be over. My curling iron is collecting dust and honestly, I’m just not a fan of having to shave my legs often enough to show them every damn day. But I was determined not to let the rising temps prevent me from getting properly primped for a well-deserved dinner and movie date night with hubs. Fittingly, we saw The Heat. You should too.

This Old Navy striped skirt was actually a last-minute purchase and it just happened to perfectly match a tank I already had in the closet. Rust and purple are one of my favorite color combos so I went with pointed flats, a sparkling drawstring bracelet, and a geode ring all in purple. Just excuse my messy mint nails. They at least go with the color scheme but man do I need a mani. And how do you like that geometric plate necklace from Forever 21? I had been dying to wear it!
